Vendor Interview

20 Key Hill Drive is a unique, one-off urban development in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, offering an oasis of calm amidst the buzz of the city. The area, once renowned for its large concentration of jewellery manufacturers, is now being transformed into an urban village and hub for creative businesses, cool bars, restaurants and independent shopping, and indeed jewellers. The property, which dates back to the 1880s, has been made into a stunning home offering the best of modern living whilst honouring its heritage. Current owner Dino explains about acquiring the property in the early 1990s; “my father bought it as an investment from a metal smelter who had worked and lived in the building for many years – from the mid 2000s the place had been unoccupied and full of rubbish, then in 2016 I began the development with the end goal of making a unique home in one of the city’s most up and coming areas. It’s hidden and quiet and has become known as the Hidden House”.

The property is conveniently located 200 metres from the Jewellery Quarter combined train and tram station which offers quick and easy travel into central Birmingham, however walking is an easy option.

Please describe the qualities of the house and garden and why you have found them a pleasure: “The building is multi-level, with the front of the building at road level and the back elevated at around 60ft. The whole place has been respectfully renovated using quality materials and bespoke finishes”.

Please describe your favourite room in the property and why: “I love the kitchen area with its Herringbone pattern white Carrara marble and bespoke units. The bi-fold doors and handmade brick facade, which match the external bricks, make the transition between inside and out a smooth one”.

Please describe your favourite aspect of the grounds and surrounding area: “I especially love the downstairs courtyard which is enclosed on three sides, it’s very private and gets the sun all day. It features a large patio door, original brick walls and rooflights looking into the kitchen below. The neighbourhood is vibrant, yet once inside you can’t hear any noise”.

Please describe your most memorable event: “I went with my father when he first viewed it, we knocked on the door and the two sliding panels on the front of the building were opened by a man wearing a leather workers apron, he shook our hands and welcomed us in. As he turned around we realised he was wearing nothing but the apron – the process of smelting was clearly too hot for wearing clothes!”.

What will you miss most and why are you selling? “i’ll miss the serenity and calm of the place; its position is so quiet that I have to remind myself it’s in the city. It’s been wonderful to operate outside of a leasehold environment and have no committee issues and total control. Now completed, it’s ready to be lived in and loved”.
